Moving Overseas Checklist

17 May 2019

Are you planning to move overseas? Moving involves more than just simply packing up your things in a suitcase (sometimes half-empty!), boarding a jet and flying away. It can be quite a stressful experience should you not have all of your ducks lined up in a row and affairs organised. As we've seen countless individuals, couples and families of all ages make the conscious jump to a foreign land, we've always prioritised one thing - to help make that transition as smooth and as enjoyable as possible. Regardless of your life stage, if you're contemplating a move overseas here's a simple and easy to follow checklist we've prepared for you to help you plan and organise the big move:

Preparation
The first step is to prepare before leaving. Research your destination and plan ahead where to stay before doing anything else. Keep in mind that you're new to that country and you'll definitely need a locale to call home, at least for the time being whilst your settling in. Take time to reach out to social media friends to see if there are any suggested places and educate yourself through some savvy online travel forums. For even more tailored or expert advice, reach out to local property agents about your plans. Consider transport availability and the convenience of amenities such as shops, schools, gyms etc.

Organise your important documents
Important documents include visas and passport documents, medical and school records (Tip: It is better to keep them in a binder or foolscap of some sort to ensure preservation and protection).

Decide if you want to ship your furniture or buy
Before you get rid of everything, take a look at your belongings. Do they have any sentimental value? The next thing to do is to declutter your current residence. Decide wisely and bring what's important to you that will also make sense to your new home. If you want to buy new furniture, the question is where are you going to put the old ones? We recommend availing a storage unit to keep them organised while you're out.

Keep things in a storage facility, if you're not moving indefinitely
If you're moving for an unspecified period of time, availing of a storage facility will cost you less than keeping an apartment open. It is also less stressful than putting your items in another family member's home.
